Making the politicians work for us

The federal government controls Australia’s airports, so sufficient pressure is needed to get the government to agree to move the airport. Most seats around Sydney Airport are held by Labor, so Labor is more vulnerable to pressure from residents. Liberal marginal seats affected by aircraft noise are Lowe, Bennelong and North Sydney. The noisiest seat is Grayndler, a safe Labor seat but one where Labor is worried about the Greens, so voter pressure is possible there.

• A new site will be assessed for environmental and economic impact
• The new airport will be built for all of Sydney’s future air traffic
• Macquarie Airports’ lease on Sydney Airport will be assigned to the new location or bought back by the government
• The existing airport land will be sold to pay for the new airport
• The new airport will become Sydney’s only public transport airport
